What is a Medical Alert Pendant?
A medical alert pendant is a small, wearable device that can be worn around the neck hanging by a lanyard or chain. The device is usually equipped with an SOS button that, when pressed, will immediately send an alert to a monitoring centre. The monitoring centre will then contact the wearer’s emergency contacts or emergency services to provide assistance.
Who can benefit from a Medical Alert Pendant?
Personal Emergency alarms like medical alert pendants can be beneficial for seniors who are at risk of falls or other accidents. They can also be helpful for those with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, who may need assistance in the event of an emergency.
A medical alert pendant can also provide peace of mind for loved ones who may worry about their elderly relatives living independently.

How do Medical Alert Pendants work?
Medical alert pendants usually consist of two parts – the actual pendant and a base station. The base station is typically placed near the individual’s bedside or in another location in the home where it can easily be reached in a medical emergency.
When the SOS button on the pendant is pressed, it will send a signal to the base station which will then place a call to the 24/7 Customer Care Centre. The Customer Care Team will then determine the best course of action, which may include contacting the individual’s emergency contacts or dispatching emergency services.

How do Tunstall’s Personal Alarms work?
Every Tunstall personal alarm is supported by our 24/7 monitoring service. This means that qualified Care Consultants are available whenever needed, to arrange the best possible assistance as quickly as possible.
With 24/7 assistance available, our personal alarms provide elderly people the care and assistance they require while still giving them the confidence and independence to live life to the full in a place of their choice.
How does the Fall Detection feature work in Tunstall’s Alarms?
If enabled, the fall detection features in Tunstall’s personal safety pendants can be life-saving. The fall detection feature is triggered if the user experiences a fall or loses their balance, measured by an in-built accelerometer. This can automatically trigger an alert when it detects that the wearer has experienced a fall. This alert will go directly to our Customer Care team which you can talk to at any time of the day. They can call for the appropriate help to assist you in emergencies. Learn more about our fall detection devices here.
How do emergency services know where to find you?
Tunstall mobile personal alarms with fall detection are equipped with GPS so emergency responders can accurately locate the wearer anytime. There are also fall detectors that are connected to your in-home personal alarm so emergency services can go directly to your listed address.
Important: Fall Detection Limitations
Fall detection technology cannot detect all types of falls, including:
- Soft falls or gradual descents
- Falls against walls or furniture
- Slow slumping or sliding
- Some dangerous falls may still go undetected
Fall detection is an additional layer of protection, not a replacement for manual activation.

How do I get funding for a medical alarm pendant?
If you are a senior citizen in Australia or New Zealand, you may be eligible for government funding to help cover the cost of your personal safety alarm. Here are some of your options when it comes to government funding:
For Australians:
Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP)
The CHSP is a government-funded program that provides support for seniors’ aged care services. Aged Care Packages available through the CHSP can include personal alarms, which can help elderly people live independently and safely in their own homes.
Department of Veteran’s Affairs RAP Scheme
If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for funding to cover the cost of your personal alarm through the Department of Veteran’s Affairs RAP Scheme. The RAP Scheme provides funding for assistive technology products and services that can help veterans live independently.
For New Zealanders:
Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC)
If you have been injured in an accident, you may be eligible for funding to cover the cost of personal alarms and other assistive technology products through ACC. A letter of recommendation from a doctor needs to be sent to the ACC and you will be contacted after this.
Veterans’ Independence Programme

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do I need a personal alarm pendant?
Did you know that one in three Australians and New Zealanders over the age of 65 will experience a fall each year? Falls can cause serious injuries, including broken bones and head injuries, which can often lead to hospitalisation. One way to help prevent falls is through medical alert devices like medical alert pendants or medical alert alarms for seniors. These devices provide peace of mind for both seniors and their loved ones, knowing that help is only a button-press away if an accident occurs.
Why not use a mobile phone instead of a medical alert system?
There are a few key reasons why mobile phones aren’t an effective safety solution like medical alert systems:
- Mobile phones typically have shorter battery life than medical alert systems, which means that they may not be reliable in an emergency.
- If you’re having a heart attack, a seizure, have poor vision or you might be in extreme pain, you may not be able to reach for your phone, especially when under duress. Finding and pressing the emergency button on your wrist or around your neck is relatively easy.
How long does the battery in my Tunstall personal alarm last in a power outage?
The Tunstall Lifeline Digital alarm contains a Nickel Metal Hydride back-up battery that recharges itself when plugged into the main power. It is recommended that the battery be replaced after five years. The battery provides up to 40 hours of standby operation. The Tunstall Gem4’s battery life is up to 72 hours under normal environmental conditions.
Will my medical alert system interfere with my pacemaker?
Will my medical alert system interfere with my pacemaker? There are many different types of pacemakers, so it’s hard to give a general answer. Some pacemakers are sensitive to electromagnetic fields and can be interfered by other electronic devices. For example, the Tunstall Gem4 cannot be worn around the neck if you have a pacemaker while our other medical alarms are cleared to be worn with a pacemaker.
Your best bet is to ask your doctor or the manufacturer of your pacemaker about any specific concerns you have.
What happens if the mobile alarm pendant gets wet?
If your personal alarm pendant gets wet, it will still function properly because it has an IP67 rating. This means that the alarm can be submerged in up to 1 meter of water for up to 30 minutes and will still remain water-resistant. So whether you accidentally drop your alarm in the sink or it starts raining while you’re out for a run, you can rest assured knowing that your alarm will continue to operate correctly.
